Description:

Who was Paul? Why did he promote Christianity? How honest was he about himself? Did he have an accomplice? Why was he more successful than Jesus himself? Why is there more proof that HE existed than there is for Jesus Christ himself?

After doing a bit of research on Mr. Maccoby it's pretty clear were he is coming from. Few scholars take this guy seriously, mainly because he is so blatantly bias. He has an agenda driven motivation for coming up with this stuff, and it is glaringly obvious. So if this is your "serious scholar" then I rest my case.

Find me a serious scholar that believes Paul made up the story of Jesus and the disciples. Using your logic we could easily question the validity of many of the historical figures that lived more than 1000 years ago. Believing that Paul's claims were legitimate is far more sound historically than many other historical facts that you would never question. It's obvious you are not motivated by historical truth, but only by a desire to discredit Christianity.

"Unfortunately, there are a lot of gullable people out there" - yes, but they tend to be theists...so they don't pay me much attention. Meanwhile, from a historical perspective, there isn't any real support for your Biblical claims of Paul EXCEPT from Paul...so circular logic takes hold for anyone to buy into it.

I understand what your trying to do, but to make a good hypothesis one must have some reasonable base in which to start. No one with a good historical understanding will take these speculations about Paul seriously. Only those who don't have a good historical perspective, or those who want desperately to discredit Paul will consider your ideas to be plausible. Unfortunately, there are a lot of gullable people out there who might be influenced by your thinking.

"he could have if the disciples weren't real either." That's even more absurd.

he could have if the disciples weren't real either. Plus, you forget that Paul wrote his own story here. They may have discredited him back then...hell that may be how he got arrested. But when good ole Constantine came along, he cannonized Paul's writings and so now every word he said MUST be the truth :{ Yeah, right. You need to step back and realize that the Bible isn't the only "holy text".

It's quite impossible to believe that Paul could have made up the fact that he had association with the disciples and gotten away with such a claim? No serious scholar would consider this a possibility. Your stretching things to the point of absurdity in order to discredit Paul in your own thinking.
