Bible  scripture  Proverbs  20:1;23:29-32  folk  song  guitar  Solomon  Jack  Marti

Description:

This song was the result of a discussion (not to say argument) I had with my brother-in-law about the "wine" Jesus created at the Wedding in Cana of Galilee. It is my belief that the wine He created was unfermented wine as though pressed fresh from the grapes. My brother-in-law's view is that Jesus created fine distilled wine. If He did, in my opinion, He would have been inconsistent with His own testimony. These passages, I believe, support my point of view. Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is raging: And whosoever is deceived thereby Is not wise. Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? They that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek mixed wine. Wine is a mocker... Who hath babblings? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek mixed wine. Wine is a mocker... Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it giveth his colour in the cup, When it moveth itself aright. At last It biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder. Wine is a mocker...

If the ruler of the feast said (John 2v10) that he had saved the best till last, then it is had to believe that only pressed grape juice was intended. See also Matth 11v19, Lk 7v34. It is a question of moderation. Of not "tarrying long" as your song puts it.

My personal opionion: I think those verses you bring up speak against drinking wine beyond moderation, and allowing it therefore to control you. I also agree with usenetposts in that I feel Christ turned the water into real wine which would have tasted like "the best saved to last" -- grape juice would not taste that way. You have a great ministry with your music :)

You'll notice I said these verses support my view. They don't necessarily prove it. However, I would like to suggest that you read Charles Chiniquy's testimony about wine in his book, 50 Years in the Church of Rome. He has a very compelling argument against the use of alcohol in any form. Also, I would recommend Samuel Bacchiocci's book, Wine in the Bible. The principle in temperance is moderation in that which is good and total abstinance from that which is not.

The way I understand it, in the Bible, "new" wine was considered the best, and the newer it was the less fermented it was. The older wine became, the more fermanted and like vinegar it became. Having grown up in a family of alcoholics, I am not really sympathetic to the "moderation" point of view, but that doesn't mean I condemn people who drink moderately. I just don't think I could ever advocate it Biblicly or on general principle. I hope you won't hold it against me.

Well, I agree with temperance in what is good and abstinence in what is not. I might have a few glasses in the course of a week, but I never have any nicotine or drugs, these things are never recommended in the Bible, but Paul recommends wine to Timothy. It's a God given gift but with responsibility, like most of God's gifts.

Because there are alcoholics around, I wholeheartedly agree that in public Christian meetings alcohol should play no part. But the individual Christian may choose to drink in private company, in moderation, if he is not at risk of alcoholism.

Didn't Michael play flute on an earlier record you did of this song?

That's the thing. How can one know whether he's at risk or not? And say I know I'm not at risk. How do I know my example wouldn't be a stumbling block even to private company? At any rate, I have no burden to prove anything, really. I just know it's not safe for me to drink, even in moderation. Let everyone be fully persuaded in their own mind. I am no one's judge. Blessings on you, brother.
